Dear Neighbours,

As you have no doubt learned by now, a company called Gerrard Clonmore Developments Ltd., has plans to erect a residential development comprised of seven 24- to 27-storey apartment buildings on the Quarry Lands at the intersection of Gerrard St. East and Clonmore Drive. The current plan calls for 1,455 total units. The developer's first move has been to apply to the Scarborough Committee of Adjustment for a minor variance, which would allow the developer to build these apartments an average of one-third smaller than is allowed in the Municipal Code. The developer already privately owns the land.

In response to a tremendous level of concern from within the community, a committee has been struck with the goal of minimizing the impact of any such development on the neighbourhood. The committee intends to represent the community by interceding at all local and provincial hearings concerning this development.

As many of you know all too well, high-density development on this environmentally sensitive parcel of land is a matter that has been visited and revisited upon this community for more than thirty years. It is the ultimate goal of our committee to make sure the matter is resolved once and for all, with full environmental safety standards in place and to the greatest possible benefit of the people who make up this neighbourhood.

We are going to need your help. Whether at the committee level, or as a volunteer to distribute flyers or make telephone calls, we are going to require lots of assistance from the community in order to be successful in preserving the texture and spirit of our neighbourhood. Please mark October 15th, the date of the Committee of Adjustment hearing, on your calendar. The hearing is scheduled for 2 o'clock.
